Every year: check, plan and report

Once a year, check where your club is, choose what to focus on next, and share your progress.

The ten steps aren't a one-off. Committees change, people move on, services change and new members join. What worked last year may need refreshing this year.

A simple yearly routine keeps things going: check where your club is, agree a few priorities for the year ahead, and report on progress. It fits naturally around your club's year, especially the AGM. It means supporting good mental health becomes part of how your club runs, rather than something that depends on one person.

What good looks like

  • The club takes the Club Check once a year.

  • The committee agrees two or three priorities for the year ahead, each with someone responsible.

  • Progress is reported to the committee during the year and at the AGM.

  • Support roles, the response plan, the support list and training records are kept up to date.

  • When people in key roles change, there's a handover.

Take the Club Check

The Florio Club Check is a short set of questions covering the five areas of the Florio Framework: Lead, Communicate, Support, Care and Connect. It shows what your club is already doing well and where there's room to improve.

It isn't a test, and there's no pass or fail. It works best when the Mental Health Lead and senior sponsor complete it together, ideally with input from staff and volunteers.

Take the Club CheckIf your club has made the Florio Club Commitment, retaking the Club Check is part of renewing your commitment every two years.

Choose your priorities

You don't need to work on everything at once. Using your Club Check results, choose two or three priorities for the year ahead. They might be steps you haven't started yet, or ways to build on what you already do. For each priority, agree:

  • What you'll do

  • Who's responsible

  • When it will be done by

Share your progress

Reporting keeps the committee involved and shows members what the club is doing.

  • To the committee: a short update at committee meetings, as often as suits your club.

  • At the AGM: a paragraph in the annual report or a short update from the Mental Health Lead or senior sponsor, covering what you've done, what's changed and what's next.

  • To members: a short message about what the club has done this year. Step 8 covers how.

Report on what the club has done, like training completed, events held or the support list updated. Never include information about individuals, or numbers small enough that someone could be identified.

Keeping things up to date

Once a year, it helps to check:

  • Are your support roles still filled, including after the AGM?

  • Does your response plan have the right names and contacts?

  • Is your support list still accurate?

  • Has everyone in a club role had training, including new people?

  • Is your policy due for review?

When someone in a key role steps down, ask them to hand over to whoever takes over, including where documents are kept and anything in progress.

Going further

  • Make it a standing agenda item

    On the committee agenda.

  • Include a paragraph

    In your AGM annual report.

  • Set reminders

For your yearly check and for reviewing your support list.

  • Create a handover note

    For people in key roles.

These ten steps are what clubs commit to when they make the free Florio Club Commitment.

Commit to working through them at your own pace, and join a growing movement across the golf community to improve mental health in the game.
